My dear Friends in Christ,
The readings for this Sunday are calling us to trust in God. The First Reading Jeremiah trusts in the Lord even though he is being plotted against. The psalm expresses hope that God will hear our prayers in times of distress. The Second Reading reminds us that Jesus rescued us even though we are sinners. And in the Gospel, Jesus tells us “fear no one” and that we are loved and cared for by God. Even though Jeremiah faced opposition and persecution, he remained steadfast in his faith and trust in God. He recognized God as a “dread warrior.” He relied on God’s strength during his time of duress. Our Gospel today tells us to trust in God’s providential care, assuring us as He did His disciples of His awareness and protection. Matthew addresses fear and courage in the context of proclaiming the message of Christ. Jesus tells His disciples not to fear those who oppose them but to trust in His providence and protection. The theme here encourages us to overcome fear and rely on the courage that comes from faith in God. God truly cares for us as individuals. Jesus affirms that God’s care extends even to the smallest details. We all have worth in God’s eyes and He always assures us that we are in His care.
The Annual Catholic Appeal continues and Corpus Christi has now reached 54% of our goal of $50,000. $27,159 has been pledged and $23,789 has already been paid. Please continue to get those pledge cards in especially if it is buried in a pile of papers in your home. We really need your help in reaching our goal.
May God bless you all,
Father John
