My dear friends in Christ,
Today’s psalm presents us with the comforting image of a weaned child snuggling up in Mom’s lap. This child experiences security and peace from a parent who is the center of his world. As children all of us have experienced the terror and fear that come from nightmares, and the need for comfort that can come from parental care and nurturing. As adults we need to remember that, in a world fraught with fear and terror, we can find the comfort that a mother offers her child when we return to God, the center of our life. It is there that we experience the peace and comfort that only God can give.
Now that we have celebrated All Saints Day and All Souls Day, we conti nue to pray for those souls who have gone before us. The custom of setting apart a special day of intercession for the faithful departed was first established in 998, and soon spread. While November 2 nd remains the liturgical celebration, the entire month of November is associated in the Western Catholic tradition with prayer for the departed. We will place the envelopes with the names of your loved ones on the Altar here at Corpus Christi in remembrance for the entire month. May they have eternal rest in God’s heavenly kingdom.
