My Dear Friends in Christ,
This Sunday’s readings highlight God’s generosity. The first reading tells us that God does not think the way we think. The second reading reminds us that we must labor to imitate Christ. The Gospel shows Jesus telling the parable about workers in the vineyard and the generous landowner who paid them the same wage. Some might argue the question of fairness. Was it fair that those who were chosen to work in the late afternoon for a short period of time were paid the same as those that began work early in the morning or midday? Where is the dignity of labor, you say? Just as each worker in the parable deserves fair treatment, all individuals merit just wages and meaningful work. Everyone has a right to equitable compensation and a fair living wage. This gives the individual a chance to provide for their family and support themselves. The point is simple in the context of this parable: We should never compare ourselves to others. The focus should always be on the well-being of all. The workers who started early in the day felt that they deserved more. They did not understand God’s grace working through the landowner who was willing to pay the same wage to all. The landowner’s hiring practice at all hours of the day symbolizes the different stages God invites all to join his kingdom. Just as the landowner seeks laborers throughout the day. God's grace is available to all of us, regardless of when we turn to Him.
May God bless you all,
Father John
