In our First Reading today, we encounter the story of King Solomon. Solomon is faced with a difficult task of ruling over God’s people with wisdom and discernment. When given the opportunity to ask for anything, with great humility, his request is for wisdom. God, pleased with his selfless request, grants him exceptional wisdom that surpasses all others. Solomon’s example serves as an example as an inspiration for anyone in a leadership role. He grasps the understanding that leadership is not merely a position of power, but rather an opportunity for service and sacrifice. This reminds us of the importance of seeking divine wisdom in our own lives, especially when faced with difficult decisions. It shows that a good leader prioritizes the needs and interest of others first. Solomon’s choice to seek wisdom exemplifies a fundamental principle of leadership: it is not about personal gain, but about serving others and ensuring their welfare. Solomon gives testimony by placing his own needs and desires aside for the needs and desires aside for the needs of the common good. Would we but do the same?
