Spiritual Wealth

 

My dear friends in Christ,

Our Gospel from Mark deals with wealth issues. One such issue regards spiritual wealth in those who think that they are more important than everyone else. In verses 38-40, Jesus specifically denounces the scribes. In the Gospel writer’s estimation they are self-important, arrogant, and self aggrandizing. This section of Mark’s Gospel, since Jesus’ triumphal entry, has been dominated by controversy and antagonistic interaction between Jesus and various groups with leadership responsibilities in first-century Judaism. It is not surprising, then, that we find here a final nail in the coffin, a sweeping condemnation of the scribes. It’s interesting to note that we find this same behaviour exhibited in our families, our workplace, our community events, and, yes, even in our Church. We are called to be kind, caring, and compassionate. We are called to move away from self-centeredness. We are called to come together and work together in our Church. We are called to build up the Kingdom of God here on Earth. We are NOT called to break down the Kingdom. Too often, someone has come to me to volunteer only to be told by others that their help is not needed. This is not very Christ-like, nor is it living out our Gospel values. We must all work together.
