My dear friends in Christ,
Today we celebrate the Second Scrutiny which occurs on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The Scrutinies, which are solemnly celebrated on Sundays and are reinforced by an exorcism, are rites for self-searching and repentance and have, above all, a spiritual purpose. The Scrutinies are meant to uncover, and then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the hearts of the elect; to bring out, and then strengthen all that is upright, strong, and good, for the Scrutinies are celebrated in order to deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is The Way, The Truth, and The Life. These rites, therefore, should complete the conversion of the elect and deepen their resolve to hold fast to Christ and to carry out their decision to love God above all. As a Parish Community, we will continue to pray and support our elect on their journey.
I would like to thank all who made a pledge to the Annual Catholic Appeal. The question asked most frequently is: “Why should I give to the Annual Catholic Appeal if I already give to the parish?” Your support of the Diocese of Trenton for programs that provide ministerial resources is important. It helps fund diocesan programs that support services to the poor, food for the hungry, and education for our children in faith. Our Lenten Evening of Reflection takes place this Monday at 7:00 PM in the Church. OFM Conventual, Father Bart Karwacki’s topic will be “Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me.” Please come and join us.
May God bless you all!
Father John
