My dear friends in Christ,
When we read the Emmaus account in Luke 24, many seem to have the same nagging question: Why didn’t those two disciples of Jesus who were in despair recognize Him immediately when He stood in their midst. Perhaps some folks, reading the account for the first time, might surmise that it would have been more compassionate for Jesus to reveal His identity at the onset, especially because they were in such despair. Surely recognizing Him immediately would have moved them to a place of rejoicing. This is particularly true since it is exactly what happened when they finally did recognize Jesus; back to Jerusalem they sprinted to announce their experiences with the other disciples. Maybe the supernatural from God puts us in dangerous territory. Spiritual blindness is difficult for most of us. We all search for the truth and sometimes the truth is right before us if we only open our eyes and hearts.
Congratulations to the Confirmation Class who received this beautiful Sacrament in Church last Thursday evening. The Confirmandi were made up of students from our own Religious Education Program and Pope John Paul II Regional School. We also had three students from Pennsylvania joining us. Special thanks to Father Pfleger, Episcopal Vicar for Burlington County; also to Mrs. Young, Dr. And Mrs. Vahey, Mrs. Kelly, and Mrs. Zagola for their hard work in preparing this year’s class.
This weekend at our 11:30 Mass, we will have our First Holy Communion for the children. Also this Sunday at 4:00 pm, the Laudate Chorale will perform in concert in the Church to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
May God bless you all!
Fr. John
