My dear friends in Christ,
Just a little faith can do the seemingly impossible! From the initial pessimism of the Prophet Habakkuk to the mustard seed hope of Luke, this week’s readings could leave us a bit baffled. Nonetheless, the message is to press on. Though we live in a world that is divided, confused and bitter, the ultimate message of Habakkuk is that God will not disappoint. Habakkuk wants to know why God is not listening and the simple answer from God is Faith. Luke gives us a short parable about duty. Jesus told them that if they had faith as small as a mustard seed they would accomplish great works. This saying meant that even those things that looked completely impossible would become possible if approached with faith. Jesus urges His followers to regard their duty as done without reward or commendation doing what they are commanded to do.
While walking through the Church last week, I found 20 Breaking Bread Hymnals missing from the Church pews. 15 were missing from the Crucifix side and 5 from the Holy Family side. It’s not so much the Breaking Bread Hymnals gone missing that’s disturbing, it’s that the cover goes with it. These vinyl protective covers cost $8.00 each and with 20 missing it’s a loss to the Church of $160.00. If you want a hymnal, see me or Deacon Mike and we’d be happy to give one to you as we do have a couple of extra cases every year. We can’t continue to subsidize the loss of the covers. If this continues we will just put the hymnals out without covers. If you took a hymnal with the cover, please do the Parish the courtesy of returning the cover.
May God bless you all!
Father John
