My dear friends in Christ,
Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, the beginning of Holy Week, and commemorates the triumphant arrival of Christ in Jerusalem, days before He was crucified. Today, we receive the palm fronds which we use to participate in the re-enactment of Christ’s arrival into Jerusalem. Palm branches were a widely recognized symbol of peace and victory. Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a young donkey (to symbolize humility) and to the joyous praises of the townspeople who threw clothes, or possibly palms in front of Him as a sign of homage and respect. We wear red vestments today to symbolize the redemption in blood that Christ paid for the world.
