My dear friends in Christ,
In today’s Gospel, James and John make their “it’s all about me” request to Jesus for the prime place of honor in heaven. When the other apostles were indignant, Jesus invites them to a deeper path of radical service. As members of the community of believers, how do we respond to those who ask for a privileged role? How do we handle feelings of resentment when special roles are given to others? Jesus recognized our deep human need for affirmation and validation but warned against the blindness of pride and ambition to fill that need. This can lead faithful people down dark paths of sin or cover-up of sin, as revealed in the great crisis in today’s Church. In our ministry we struggle to meet the needs of the people of God while supporting the prayer of the Church. How can we keep our parish spiritually healthy? The answer is by seeking a path of deep, consistent, and honest prayer to guide the radical shift from serving self to self as servant.
