My dear friends in Christ,
Jesus enters the synagogue in Capernaum where He speaks “with authority” — the authority of God — something new and refreshing to the soul. His voice and message had a power over evil spirits, who would not want to listen to Him or obey? The rabbis and scribes didn’t want to listen to Him. The rabbis had the authority to impose a decision with binding force. The scribes, who were teachers of lower rank than a rabbi, did not possess this authority. Mark reports that the people respond to Jesus’ teaching with astonishment, noting Jesus’ authority and contrasting it with the scribes. When Jesus spoke, it was as if He needed no authority beyond himself. He spoke with utter independence. He cited no authorities and quoted no experts. When Jesus teaches, things happen! His teaching is not just wisdom but power. He spoke with the finality of the voice of God.
We will give a general blessing of the throats at all Masses this weekend and again on Wednesday, the Feast of St. Blaise. Due to COVID , no individual blessings of throats involving any physical contact is permitted.
The Season of Lent will soon be upon us with Ash Wednesday approaching on February 17th. Please note that the Church has never obliged attendance at Mass or the imposition of ashes on this day. Ashes will be distributed but the priest and ministers will wear gloves and use a Q-tip. We will not have Stations of the Cross in Church during Lent. We are unable to provide booklets due to COVID. You are encouraged to pray the Stations of the Cross in private.
May God bless you all,
Father John
