My dear friends in Christ,
As we are all aware, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) has been making headlines as an increasing health scare throughout the world these past two months. As a result, the Diocese has received calls and e-mails regarding specific guidelines for how a parish should respond. We are told from the Diocese that “the particular concerns surrounded physical contact during the Kiss of Peace and the Distribution of Holy communion Under Both Species (some EMHC’s are concerned about distributing Communion on the tongue, to which I would ask them to refrain from ministering if they were anxious). Remind those who are ill, especially those with flu-like or respiratory issues, that they should stay home from Church in those situations. If someone asks for a dispensation along those lines, grant it.” This means that if you are sick or have flu-like symptoms, PLEASE STAY HOME! We will continue to make our clergy and ministers in the parish practice good hygiene especially when it comes to hand washing. We currently supply hand sanitizer and soap and water which should be used before and after the distribution of Communion for the safety of the ministers. With regards to shaking hands at the Sign of Peace, if you feel uncomfortable, a simple nod of the head or wave will suffice. I think we all get that. Participation in human contact is not required. It is better to remain diligent and cautious. If the situation in our area were to change or if the CDC offers more specific instructions, we will discern them as they arise. Be Safe!
May God bless you all,
Father John
