My dear friends in Christ,
Are you willing to go “out on a limb” for your faith? Are you willing to set aside your pride and put Jesus first? Only Luke tells the story of Zacchaeus and his determination to catch a glimpse of Jesus as He passed through Jericho on His way to Jerusalem. Zacchaeus was short and needed to climb the limb of the Sycamore tree to gain a better sight line. Jesus told Zacchaeus that He would be a guest at his house, and he was overjoyed. When the crowd heard this, they complained about Jesus’ habit of dining with sinners. Zacchaeus was probably “on the take” but he promised to make restitution for “skimming.” Jesus told Zacchaeus that he was a true “son of Abraham,” worthy to inherit God’s promise of salvation.
All the parishes of the Diocese of Trenton are participating in CALLED BY NAME, a program of vocations awareness that begins this weekend. Perhaps you know a man who would, in your opinion, have the qualities to become a priest. Please recommend this person by filling out the card in the pew and placing it in the collection basket or giving it to me or Deacon Mike.
Historically, the custom of praying for the dead dates as far back as 2 Maccabees 12:42-46. The custom of setting apart a special day of intercession for the Faithful Departed was first established in 998, and soon spread. November 2nd remains the Liturgical celebration. May their souls and the souls of all the Faithful Departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
May God bless you all!
Father John
