My dear friends in Christ,
According to the CDC, more than one third of Americans are not getting enough sleep. I know because I am one of them. It seems that the disciples were lacking sleep as well. Jesus asks his disciples to “come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest awhile.” Coming in mid-summer, we often hear this passage preached as an encouragement for us to embrace a needed break from our work and stressful life. Jesus wanted his disciples to rest and reflect upon what they were doing. And yet, here is Jesus, allowing his heart to be moved with pity by the insistent crowd. Upon seeing them, He could not bring himself to rest. He, as only he could, began to teach. The crowd wandered aimlessly like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus became their shepherd. Jesus puts his own rest aside to tend to the needs of the people. How often do we put our needs aside to help others? Are we willing to imitate Jesus in helping others?
Speaking of help, after having listened to some of you, we have been in contact with Lifetouch about putting together a new Parish Directory. The last directory was done in 2010. We need volunteers to assist with this project and in particular a “point person” who will assist and correspond with the Lifetouch representative. If you can help in any way please call the office and leave your name and telephone number. The Evangelization committee will also be involved with this endeavor. “Get ready to have your portrait made!”
May God bless you all!
Father John
